About Ella
In Spring of 2020, I graduated from Whitworth University where I studied composition with Brent Edstrom and Dr. Cary Boyce. During a semester abroad, I studied composition under the tutelage of Jurgen De Pillecyn at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.
I love to write choral music, and am especially drawn to the sacred music of the Orthodox Christian Church, from which there is a wealth of tradition and musical heritage to learn and build upon. The art of the Church is unlike any other, and to create within it's walls is to participate in the beauty and prayers of centuries past.
In addition to choral music, I'm particularly interested in multi-medium art pieces, with interdependence between disciplines. Examples of such works I've composed include an interactive piece for solo violin and Max MSP visuals, a piece for solo percussion, water, and live art, and a piece for interdependent dance and piano. These pieces are such that all mediums used - be it dance, art, music - are necessary for the complete performance of the work; no element is superior to the other.
Creating in this way breaks through the neat walls of the artistic disciplines and opens a world of possibilities. The stage is the canvas, and the palette is endless.
I am also a violinist, which has greatly influenced my musical experience and style. I grew up listening not only to the classical greats, but the Appalachian masters like Edgar Meyer, Béla Fleck, and Yo-Yo Ma. This inspired a love of folk and bluegrass, which has opened many fun doors along the way. I played fiddle and bass for several years in the American-Irish band, Broken Whistle, before we disbanded in 2018. I love jamming in the musical styles of Irish, Scottish, Folk, Bluegrass, and Gypsy Jazz. While playing in Crete, I also had the opportunity to learn some traditional Greek folk tunes and styles. . . Opa!
Above all, the most memorable music I have created has been in collaboration with other artists or musicians. Creating together brings humanity together and helps us turn our gaze to something more perfect and eternal. It breaths redemption into our souls.
